After the soaring, unlimited top-speed thrills of Road America's majestic forest straights, our next stop takes us to a place that feels completely opposite, yet twice as terrifying. We are moving from the sweeping, high-speed asphalt of Wisconsin to the narrow, undulating roller-coaster of Lexington. Welcome to the sacred, green-bordered asphalt of Mid-Ohio.

Known for its beautiful, manicured scenery, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course presents a deceptive challenge. To the untrained eye, it looks like a peaceful park. To a CART driver wrestling a 950-horsepower turbocharged beast with no power steering, it was a high-speed claustrophobic nightmare. Unlike the massive modern tracks of today, Mid-Ohio is incredibly narrow, forcing drivers into a relentless, nose-to-tail "train" where overtaking requires surgical precision and absolute bravery.

Opened in 1962 near Lexington, Ohio, this 2.258-mile permanent road course was forged into the rolling hills of Richland County to test machine agility and driver finesse above all else. Over the decades, it has served as an essential proving ground for everything from amateur club racing and IMSA sports cars to professional motorcycle championships and premier open-wheel series.

What makes Mid-Ohio so unique is how closely the cars can run to one another. Because CART machinery of the mid-90s relied heavily on underbody ground effects rather than massive, drag-heavy wings, drivers weren't plagued by the "dirty air" that ruins modern racing.

This allowed drivers to run inches apart, drafting down the backstretch and going side-by-side through the Keyhole. Because the track is so narrow, drivers routinely spent multiple corners fighting wheel-to-wheel, refusing to yield because there was simply no room to "spill out" of the racing line. It looked less like heavy Indy cars and more like a high-speed slot car race where the drivers' nerves were tested to the absolute limit.

But there was a catch. One tire off the racing line, and you met the track’s most infamous defense.

Unlike typical American tracks of the era that featured concrete walls or deep gravel traps, Mid-Ohio was designed with a European aesthetic: pristine, vibrant green grass running right up to the edge of the curbing.

While it looked stunning on television, the "European Grass Trap" was a wolf in sheep's clothing. At 150 mph, dipping just a single rear tire onto that slick grass meant instant disaster. The moment the high-powered Firestone or Goodyear tires touched the grass, the car would rotate violently, transforming the driver into a mere passenger as they hurtled toward the tire barriers.

Add in Mid-Ohio’s notorious "checkerboard" asphalt track surface—which combined multiple types of sealants that became slick as ice when hot or wet—and you had a recipe for chaotic, heart-stopping spins.

The ultimate test of a driver's chassis setup and bravery occurs after the long backstretch. Entering Turns 7, 8, and 9—collectively known as "The Madness"—drivers face a technical sequence of blind, off-camber crests and sharp elevation drops. As you crest the hill, the car goes incredibly light, almost airborne, completely unloading the suspension. Drivers had to turn the wheel and aim for an apex they couldn't even see, trusting that their ground effects would suck the car back down to the pavement before the grass claimed another victim.
