There has never been a better bureaucratic accident in automotive history. A dry paragraph in an FIA rulebook forced the world's largest carmakers to build genuine competition machines, slap license plates on them, and sell them to anyone with a deposit. For roughly a decade, you could walk into a dealership and buy a rally car with cupholders.
The "Win on Sunday, Sell on Monday" Rulebook
Group A replaced the insane Group B era after 1986, and its central rule was brutally simple: if you wanted to race it, you had to sell it. The FIA demanded 2,500 production units of the base model, plus 2,500 of any "evolution" variant you wanted to homologate. That single number is why the Lancer Evolution, the Impreza WRX STI, the Celica GT-Four, and the Escort RS Cosworth exist at all.
Manufacturers couldn't cheat with a hand-built halo car sold to three collectors. They had to tool up a real assembly line for a car with a welded-in strut brace, a hood full of vents, and suspension geometry designed for Finnish gravel. Then they had to make it pass emissions and survive a school run.
The evolution clause is the part that turned this into an arms race. Mitsubishi launched Evo I in 1992 and iterated every eighteen months or so — new turbos, wider tracks, revised differentials — because each homologated update was a competitive weapon. Subaru answered with the 22B and a string of STI versions, and Toyota kept sharpening the ST205 until the FIA caught them cheating with an illegal turbo restrictor bypass in 1995.
Grip Over Brute Force: The AWD Revolution
Before these cars, fast street driving meant managing a rear-drive chassis that wanted to swap ends, or a front-driver that pushed wide the moment you got greedy. Group A homologation specials rewrote the equation by throwing mechanical grip at the problem. Four driven wheels, short overhangs, a low centre of gravity, and a chassis stiffened to satisfy scrutineers rather than accountants.
The differentials did the heavy lifting. Mitsubishi's Active Yaw Control on the Evo IV onwards actively overdrove the outside rear wheel to rotate the car into a corner — a genuinely radical idea in a 1996 family sedan. Subaru answered with a driver-adjustable centre diff (DCCD) on the STI, letting you dial torque split from neutral to rear-biased depending on surface.
Then add helical or clutch-type limited-slip units front and rear, quick steering racks, and spring rates that would embarrass a modern hot hatch. The result was a car that flattered an average driver spectacularly. Point it at a canyon road, trust the front end, and it would carry corner speeds that made contemporary supercars look clumsy in the wet.
The mechanical foundation under all this was engineered like industrial equipment. Mitsubishi's iron-block four is the obvious example, while Subaru's flat-four took a completely different path to the same goal. The resulting rivalry between these two engine architectures became one of the defining technical battles of the Group A era.

The Pops, Bangs, and Anti-Lag Magic
Driving one of these things cold is a miserable experience, and that's the charm. Big single turbos meant nothing happened below 3,000 rpm — just a hollow, wheezy nothingness while the exhaust housing warmed up. Then the boost gauge would snap sideways and the whole car would gather itself and go.
The competition cars ran full anti-lag, dumping fuel into the exhaust manifold to keep the turbine spinning, which is where the machine-gun crackle came from. Street versions never had it from the factory, but tuners found ways, and a badly-set-up Evo popping flames on overrun became the defining soundtrack of a generation.
Everything else felt like a race car with the noise deleted. Steering loaded with texture, brakes with no travel and no servo mush, a ride quality that transmitted every expansion joint straight into your spine. Recaro buckets, a Momo wheel, a boost gauge glued to the A-pillar, and a boot big enough for spare wheels — because that was the actual design brief.
